How One Book Became Three: Going Forth With The Daughters of Zelophehad

I’m often asked why I wrote “Heavenly Lights: Noah’s Journey.” At first, I wasn’t planning on writing a series about the daughters of Zelophehad. I had written about their bold “ask” for their father’s land in “Lioness: Mahlah’s Journey,” and I was ready to move on to more Biblical Fiction. The girls wouldn’t leave me alone. They had the promise of land, but they hadn’t received it yet because Canaan hadn’t been conquered by the Israelites. Was there more story to be told?

I reasoned the girls needed to receive their land. The book of Joshua was before me and we know the girls were walking every step with Joshua because they remind him about their inheritance of land in Joshua 17:3-6. I asked my publisher if I could write two more books taking Zelophehad’s daughters through the book of Joshua. Pelican said, “Yes.” The only problem was that my hero for Noah’s story couldn’t speak or hear. How was I going to bring Jeremiah to life? The daughters of Zelophehad wouldn’t be going to war for the city of Ai, so who would bring that battle to the reader?

And Eli in Milcah’s story wasn’t the most heroic of men. Milcah herself was the wise, quiet sister, not the bold heroine for a novel. No one said writing a novel was easy. With God all things are possible, so I continued writing about five orphaned sisters who changed history. After a lot of brainstorming and prayer, I am overjoyed to bring a series on the daughters of Zelophehad to light. Even though some of the characters were a bit challenging and made me consume way too much chocolate.

I hope you enjoy spending more time with Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah as they march into the book of Joshua. May you go forth with God like the daughters of Zelophehad.
