Have you ever read a book that had a plot twist you didn’t like? Maybe you enjoyed the story until one aspect rubbed you the wrong way. If only the author had chosen to take it down this path instead. Or if only the heroine had made a different choice. Or if only the hero wasn’t so interested in a subject you care nothing about.

If you can relate, then you’ll probably understand one of the things I love most about writing. As an author, I have the freedom to take my story in whatever direction I choose. If I want the main characters to fall in love early on and then face challenges, no problem. If I prefer they overcome obstacles before realizing their love for each other, I make it so. If I feel there needs to be a new character added in for comic relief—voila! Enter crazy cousin Hank. And if I don’t like how one character’s words must be making another character feel, I simply press delete and adjust accordingly.

It’s not always as simple as it seems, of course. Wanting a story to sound a particular way and actually making it happen are two totally different things. Plus, my editor may request certain changes that alter some of my vision—although typically, I’ve found such suggestions to only impact my writing for the better. But overall, I love the privilege to dream up my own characters, plots, relationships and situations.

Watching those ideas come to fruition is an energizing, beautiful, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately rewarding process. One I hope my readers appreciate in the end when all they see is the final, polished product and not the many, many, many revisions that led to that point.
