Why write a lockdown story?

Well, the short answer is it seemed like a good idea at the time. It was March, I was standing in a very, very long queue for a supermarket. The sixth in a day, as I was trying to do a week’s shop for my parents and everywhere was running out of stuff where people were panic buying. And I wondered what it would look like by Christmas. How would Christmas even work? How would people find love when you can’t mix households or do anything?

So Virtually Yours was born. It started with a typo, something I do extremely well. It’s the computer that corrects my spelling, not me. I pulled out my phone and started coming up with names that only had one letter different, but would change completely.

I did toy with Harry/Harri, but that would be awkward.

Of course back in March we were told this would all be over by Christmas. Right now in November, we are in our second lockdown, and whilst they are hopeful we can have more than six people around the table at Christmas, when you’re a family of six in one household, who gets to sit outside when our bubble guests come around? (Volunteers to wear her nice padded jacket and new hat outside.)

Christmas will definitely be different this year. No carols around the town centre tree. No packed church services.

But you know who hasn’t changed even though the world has?

Jesus. The same yesterday, today and forever. The God who loves you, now and always. The reason for the season.

Merry Christmas. And it may be a lonely, different one, but remember with God by your side, you’re never really alone.
