Life isn’t always easy. Sometimes it seems like a series of hills and valleys. The mountaintop experiences are easy to celebrate, but the valleys can feel so dark.

But many times, it’s in those valleys that our faith is refined.

A few years ago, I went through a valley like that, a season of loss. Never before had I spent more time crying out to God. I found that as I sought Him with my whole heart, my despair was replaced by hope that even in the midst of dark times, the sun would shine for me again.

I wanted to write a story about life’s mountains and valleys, about overcoming. A story that would offer hope in the hard seasons. As I meditated on the words in Psalm 34, The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, King of Hearts began to take shape in my mind.

King of Hearts is the story of finding beauty in brokenness.

Harper and Dalton both suffered unspeakable losses. Both lived in the loneliness of their secrets. Harper found it hard to talk about her mistakes, as though being a Christian meant she was supposed to be perfect. Until an imperfect man gave her the courage to take another chance on love.

Wracked with guilt, Dalton lived a vagabond lifestyle, running from his pain until the day he ran straight into Harper’s path. And God’s grace.

Through learning to trust God and each other, Harper and Dalton found their way through their seasons of sorrow and discovered that even in the hard times, life is a precious gift. Like Job, their trials refined their faith and in the end, God restored what was lost in a most beautiful and amazing way.

I hope in some small way the story illustrates the depths of God’s love and the richness of His grace!

After keeping a secret promise to a friend, Harper Blessings' s life is spiraling out of control. Her food truck barely pays the bills, she' s raising her rebellious brother and caring for her forgetful aunt...and she' s four months pregnant.

When Aunt Clara wanders off at a carnival and hires the carousel operator who rescues her to do odd jobs, Harper' s house-of-cards life begins to topple. The last thing she needs is a handsome drifter complicating her already problematic life. Or so she thinks.

Drifter Dalton Kingston has a few secrets of his own. Growing up as a child of privilege, he wanted for nothing...except love. Then an unspeakable tragedy causes him to walk away from it all, pushing love as far away as possible. Until love pushes back in the form of a beautiful woman who desperately needs his help, and the God he' s not sure he can forgive.
