I was a precocious child. At age four, I was inexplicably drawn to the light-blue boxed set on the top shelf in our basement that was the Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and convinced my mom to read them to me. At first she tried to explain that I wouldn’t like the books because there were no pictures. She was right: I didn’t like them. I loved them! I was happily transported back to the late 19th century, and listened intently, completely enthralled by Laura’s stories of growing up in the woods in Wisconsin. As the series progressed, I was enamored by her adventures in the covered wagon with Pa, Ma, and Mary, inspired by her experience teaching in a one room schoolhouse, and fascinated by her courtship with the dashing Almanzo Wilder.
Growing up with the chaos created by younger twin brothers, this time spent listening to my mom read aloud meant I had her all to myself, and those quiet moments of connection are memories that continue to occupy a special place in my heart. Those moments spent listening were also important for another reason: a deep, abiding appreciation for the power of storytelling, literature, and reading was firmly established as the foundation of my innermost self by the time we finished the series.
Even back then, I was fascinated by the author’s ability to whisk me away to a completely new time and place solely through the use of words on a page. This deeply influenced the kind of person I hoped to become . . . an author! And now, with the release of A Christmas Cup of Joe, I can officially say I am one. Four-year-old Kirsten would be thrilled!
