What’s the best vacation you ever experienced and why?
by Karen Malley

In June of 2021 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After getting on the other side of surgery and treatment, I had a new perspective on life. Once you go through cancer, there’s always the possibility of it returning, so it spurs you to make the most of your second chance.

I lost my father to cancer, and one thing he always wanted to do was see the redwoods in California. He never made it there. I didn’t want to say the same. In addition to seeing the redwood trees, Yosemite was on my bucket list.

In June of 2022, my husband, my two sons, and I hopped on a plane to California. We visited San Francisco, dipped our toes in the Pacific Ocean, and visited four National Parks: Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, and Pinnacles. So yes, I saw the redwood trees, but the highlight for me was in Yosemite. We hiked the Four Mile Trail, which is actually a 9.6 mile round trip hike. With a 3200 ft elevation gain, this was a challenging hike, but oh, so worth it. The top of the trail overlooks amazing views of Yosemite Valley, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, and Half-Dome.

One year after being diagnosed with cancer, I was able to keep pace with my two teenage boys and hike up a mountain. I stood on the top of that mountain praising God, not only for the beauty around me, but also for bringing me through cancer, a journey that brought my family closer together. I’m so grateful to be healthy now, and am using this time that God has given me not only to spend time with my family, but also to work in a job where we’re bringing new medicines to patients, and writing books with the goal of bringing people closer to God. Life is good!

How did you come up with your title? I had a shoulder replaced in June of 2020. The surgeon also did repair on a broken acromion (the flat bone connected to the clavicle) that forms the top curve. I found out later the pins were just “floating.:” So that part of the...
